More Events Should Offer Prize Money Says UK Spartan Coach

OCR coach Michael Cohen, who runs Wild Forest Gym and heads up Spartan Race Training UK announced today that he would like to see more event organisers offering prize money in order to reward athletes and raise the profile of Obstacle Course Racing.

“OCR’ing is soon to be an official sport and now we have OCR athletes training 6-days a week and racing a hard OCR season.” explains Michael who coaches 2013 Spartan Race leader Thomas Blanc.

“The athletes need need to be rewarded for their commitment and help to drive their performances further. Now that there are so many races in the UK OCR series the athletes can be selective as to which ones to race at, and one of the criteria will be prize money.” Continue reading

If you don’t already know Spartan Race have appointed their first official UK training coach Michael Cohen of Wild Forest Gym. Following this they have now set up training camps at Pippingford Park (home to the Spartan Races later this year) taking potential participants of Obstacle Races through their paces and offering advice on how get most out of yourself.
We were lucky enough to get involved on their second ever session and after an early start turned up ready for action. They were running advanced or beginner sessions across the day and we were bold enough to go for the advanced option starting at 9am. We caught up with Michael to ask a few questions read them here. What is the philosophy of the training camp?

  • There are no limits or boundaries. Sometimes it takes stepping out of their comfort zone so that contenders can move beyond anything they have done before.
  • To teach contenders functional natural movements – climb, jump, throw, lift, carry, run, balance and crawl. It is these principal movement skills that will also develop their strength, power, flexibility, co-ordination and endurance skills. Continue reading
